Even for a dress-obsessed woman like me, there still seem to be so many styles that I haven’t comprehensively tried. Scrolling through all the dress outfit posts on this blog (and trust me there are quite a lot of pieces sitting in my closet that haven’t yet made it to a post), it is easy to see that while I love all clothes, dresses have a special place in my heart. From vintage shirtdresses to midi velvet dresses, 70’s inspired party dresses to short checkered bib dresses, lacy little bodycons to dresses from special places, I have quite the range in my arsenal.

However, t-shirt dresses have always been a style that I have strayed away from, feeling that out of all the styles they were one of the least flattering to my particular body shape. I like to accentuate my waist and t-shirt dresses, with their boxy shape, do the exact opposite.

Yet, t-shirt dresses are one of the most versatile pieces you can have in your closet. They can be dressed up by adding a blazer and smart flats, dressed down with a denim jacket and trendy sneakers, or found somewhere in the middle with a leather jacket and ankle booties. They are — quite obviously as the name suggests — just an extension of your favourite comfy t-shirt.

I found this particular one in the Zara summer sale and was immediately drawn to its vibrant orange colour — one of my favourite shades to wear. When I saw the embroidered patch declaring “Bonjour baby”, I gasped with delight and let my suspicions towards t-shirt dresses fall to the wayside. Upon purchasing it, I presumed I would throw it on as an easy outfit for a weekend trip to Malibu; but, instead found myself walking the streets of Brooklyn in it one very hot day.

At first, I was unsure what shoes to pair with the dress, but I knew I needed a little bit of height and so went with these beautifully embroidered Public Desire wedges (also purchased in their summer sale). I liked how the black ribbon of the shoes tied in with the black stitching around the embroidered patch of the dress. The trio of colourful thrifted bangles popped with the colours of the dress and were a pretty permanent fixture on my arm throughout the month of August, while the thrifted cream knitted bag pulled everything together.

I have found some other more fall appropriate t-shirt dresses that would work well as a base for some transitional outfits. Forever 21 has a load of well-priced options in a range of colours and materials. A crushed velvet t-shirt dress or a faux suede t-shirt dress would be lovely paired with knee-high boots in the coming months. You can never go wrong with a basic coloured t-shirt dress either with a crew neck, or a front V-cutout, lace-up detailing, or (my personal favourite) corset detailing.

The styling options are endless, so let me know if you would like me to show you more ways of how I would style these pieces!
